Performance Evaluation of a Prestressed Belitic Calcium Sulfoaluminate Cement (BCSA) Concrete Bridge Girder

Belitic calcium sulfoaluminate (BCSA) cement is a sustainable alternative to Portland that offers rapid setting characteristics could accelerate throughput in precast concrete operations. BCSA cements have lower carbon footprint, embodied energy, and natural resource consumption than cement. However, these benefits are not often utilized structural members due lack of specifications perceived logistical challenges. This paper evaluates the performance full-scale precast, prestressed voided deck slab bridge girder made with concrete. The rapid-set properties allowed initial compressive strength reach required 4300 psi release at 6.5 h after casting. Prestress losses were monitored long-term using vibrating wire strain gages cast into level prestressing strands data compared American Association State Highway Transportation Officials Load Resistance Factor Design (AASHTO LRFD) predicted prestress losses. AASHTO methods for loss calculation overestimated gage data. Material testing was performed quantify material including strength, tensile static dynamic elastic modulus, creep, drying autogenous shrinkage. results predictions creep shrinkage tested mid-span distance 1.25 times depth beam (1.25d) from face support until failure.
